My i Japonia...

The Japanese Week

in Arkady Fiedler Primary School number 5 in Gniezno

The Japanese Week was held at our school from 4th to 8th April, 2011 and it was initiated by our European Club and the Student Council guided by Małgorzata Tomczak, Lidia Bosacka and Wioletta Smaglewska.  It was organized to express the solidarity of our students and teachers with the Japanese people struck by the tragedy caused by the earthquake and tsunami.

During this week students completed a number tasks:

-         first grade students drew pictures with “The most beautiful flowers for Japan”

-         second graders made bookmarks for their Japanese friends

-         third graders made Japanese flags and origami figures

-         fourth and sixth graders prepared class displays connected with Japan

-         fourth, fifth and sixth graders wrote letters to Japanese children.

Children were encouraged and helped by teachers working in the school library and the common room, where displays about Japan also appeared.  Moreover, the library teachers prepared a Japanese corner, where students could read books about Japan, see albums and learn about the Japanese culture. Students learned about Japan also during the European Club meetings.

The idea of the Japanese Week was strongly approved by the headmistress, Anna Wójcik-Starczewska. She emphasized the importance of human solidarity, especially today, when there is so much hostility in the world. “Children should be taught that in the face of tragedy they should help other people” – she pointed.

The Japanese Week ended with a symbolic “circle of friendship”. Teachers and students gathered at the playground and formed a circle, holding their hands. Then they let red and white balloons go  into the air. Since red and white are the national colors of both Poland and Japan, the balloons were a symbol of our solidarity with Japan. “We’re happy that our students can feel the spirit of solidarity and friendship” – said Anna Wójcik-Starczewska and Małgorzata Tomczak.

We want to share the students’ drawings and letters with the Japanese Embassy in Warsaw and also present them the pictures taken during the Japanese Week.

    ODPOWIEDZ
